Petals Open to the Moon or “Pet” is the name of the host body that is given to Wanderer after she is extracted from Melanie. Although Wanderer did not want to be revived, many of the humans in Jeb‘s base had come to respect and appreciate Wanderer as on of their own, so they decided to do it anyway. Although Doc promised Wanderer that he would not put her into another host, he tells Wanderer that Jared held him at knife-point and forced him to do it.

Pet originally lived in Seattle and lived with her mother Cloud Spinner. Posing as new neighbors, Melanie, Jared, and Jamie approached Pet, gassed her, then took her back to the caves. The humans tell Wanderer that their selection was not random and that it took some time to find a body because they wanted to find one that would suit Wanderer perfectly. Jamie describes the selection process as follows: See, Mel sad we had to get someone young-someone who had a bigger percentage of life of a soul or something. But not too young because she knew you wouldn’t want to be a child. And then Jared liked this face, because he said no one could ever dis…distrust it. You don’t look dangerous at all. You look the opposite of dangerous. Jared said anyone who sees you would naturally want to protect you, right, Jared? But then I got the final say, because I was looking for someone who looked like you. And I thought this looked like you. Because she sort of looks like an angel, and you’re good like that. And really pretty. I knew you would be pretty.

When Wanderer reawakens in Pet’s body, she notes how fragile and limited the body is, and also how young the body is. Pet is two weeks away from turning 17, though Wanderer lies and says she is turning 18 for Ian‘s benefit. In addition, due to Pet’s angelic and innocent looking face, Wanderer also becomes a victim of constant hair-stroking and face-touching.

In adapting to her new body, Wanderer starts to fear that Ian may be turned off and no longer feel as he did when she was in Melanie’s body. Although he is constantly by her side, he is no longer overly affectionate as he used to be. After Jamie conducts a meeting between Wanderer and Ian, it is revealed that Ian’s apprehension was because he wasn’t sure if Wanderer still wanted to be with him. In the end, they are able to reconcile, and from that moment they become partners for life. Pet becomes Wanderer’s 10th and final host.
