Kyle O’Shea

Kyle is the elder of the two O’Shea brothers. While he may resemble Ian in looks, they are not at all similar in personality. Kyle is ruthless and stubborn, and he is not afraid to resort to brutality. Although Kyle can be reasonable and calm, his anger usually gets the better of him. He holds an immense hatred for the Souls, especially since his girlfriend was captured by them. His hatred for the Souls is so strong that he attempts to kill Wanderer, despite the fact that she’s been accepted into the community and deemed harmless.

Kyle’s relationship with his younger brother, Ian, is one of complication. Although they are brothers and remain close due to their blood connection, they get into plenty of arguments while in the caves. Ian makes no secret of his disapproval for his brother’s actions and behavior, and when Ian falls in love with Wanderer, it only complicates their relationship.

When Wanderer is left alone, Kyle attempts to murder her by pushing her into the underground river. Wanderer is able to fend him off and Kyle finds himself about to fall in, she ends up saving him. After his failed attempt at murder, a tribunal is held to determine Kyle’s fate. Many of Wanderer’s friends are in favor of severe punishment, including his brother Ian, but in the end Kyle finds himself in Wanderer’s debt, as she decides to let remain in the caves without punishment.

After Wanderer teaches Doc how to extract a Soul from a human body, Kyle sneaks out of the caves and goes on a hunt to find Jodi, his girlfriend who was captured by the Souls. He ends up finding “Jodi” in her old room at her parents’ house. He breaks into her room and takes her back with him to the caves. Jodi who is no longer Jodi, is now a Soul that Kyle nicknames “Sunny.” Much like Ian and Wanderer, Kyle is very gentle and kind to Sunny, and he is extremely protective of her. This great shift in behavior leaves many in Jeb‘s cell surprised.

Sunny is eventually extracted from Jodi, but Jodi does not immediately return. Time passes, and when the humans start to fear that Jodi’s lifeless body might start to physically fade because they have no way to feed her, Kyle decides to put Sunny back in. After Sunny is restored, again she is constantly attached to Kyle, never wanting him to leave her side. Kyle continues to be her protector, holding onto the hope that Jodi may still come back, yet at the same time finding himself strangely accepting of his present situation with Sunny.
