Sam Elliot as Uncle Jeb
Jeb may carry a gun, but he is not a violent man if he doesn’t have to be. He is also genuinely interested in the Souls and as such, he attempts to slowly integrate Wanderer into his community. Although his behavior and many of his decisions may come across as odd or even unreasonable, it always becomes evident that Jeb knows exactly what he is doing and has had a plan in his head all along.
Jeb’s sister is Magnolia (Maggie), who unlike her brother does not want any involvement with the Souls. This causes somewhat of a rift between the two, but Jeb’s devotion to practicality and fairness takes precedent over his sister’s prejudices.
When he and a group of humans find the dehydrated Wanderer in the desert, it’s evident that his niece has been taken over by a Soul as the silver lining flickers in her eyes, but instead of killing her, Jeb gives her water and brings her back to his base. He is fully aware that “Melanie” cannot be trusted, but he treats her gently and kindly, eventually become a trusted friend. It is Jeb who coins the nickname “Wanda”, stating that “Wanderer is too much of a mouthful.”
