Jamie Stryder

Jamie is Melanie’s younger brother. He is a kind-hearted boy who is generally well-liked and trusting. He is 14 years old and while he does display the typical child-like naivety of a young teenager, he can also be quite mature. He is eager to join Jared on raids, but he is never allowed to go.

Jamie is not the first to treat Wanderer nicely, but he is the first to trust her. Although she is a Soul who is inhabiting the body of his sister, he genuinely likes spending time with Wanderer and listening to her stories about the other planets and species.

Jamie also has a close relationship with Jared, sometimes looking up to him as an idol and mimicking the way he speaks. In one of Melanie’s memories, she observes that Jamie “sounds more like Jared every day – one of the many forms of hero worship.” This idolatry only adds to Jamie’s desire to join on a raid.

When Wanderer is brought back in Pet‘s body, Jamie is the only one who does not treat her any differently. This is mostly due to the fact that he was always able to distinguish the two girls (Wanderer and Melanie) from each other even when they were sharing a body.

Jamie is the one who picks Wanderer’s new host body at the end of the novel.
