Ian O’Shea

Ian is one of the rebel humans in Jeb‘s cell. He is first introduced as one of the Soul-hating humans and has no desire to see Wanderer live, but he soon after develops a change of heart and finds himself developing a friendship and eventually a romantic relationship with her.

His change of heart occurs after he and Jared confront Wanderer about the Seeker. He starts to believe that Wanderer means no harm and finds himself feeling regretful for his previous brash actions. When Jared and some of the other Soul-hating humans go on a raid, Ian stays behind and spends more time with Wanderer. His hatred for the Souls is quelled and he begins to develop a friendship with her, later admitting that he wants to protect her from the other humans.

Ian’s feelings for Wanderer eventually develop into romantic feelings and although he is affectionate towards her, she will not oblige because of Melanie and because she is genuinely confused about how she feels about him. Because Ian is in love with Wanderer, he is highly protective of her and will stop at nothing to ensure her safety.

Although Ian is caring and kind, there are some individuals in the caves that he finds himself in conflict with. First, there is his older brother Kyle. Ian makes no secret of his disapproval for his elder brother’s ruthless actions and despite their blood connection, he does not hesitate in condemning Kyle after Wanderer is almost killed. Second is Ian’s rivalry with Jared, due to the fact that he loves Wanderer who is in Melanie’s body. Ian is not fond of Jared because he is jealous that Wanderer has feelings for him. He’s also immensely disapproves of how horribly Jared continued to treat Wanderer after she was deemed harmless.

When Wanderer decides to sacrifice herself to give Melanie her body back, Ian is devastated and calls for a tribunal. Ultimately, his protestations are denied and Wanderer leaves him. After a while, Wanderer is brought back against her wishes. Ian is thrilled, but also finds himself confused and apprehensive because he is not sure if Wanderer is comfortable with him or if she still has leftover feelings for Jared. Wanderer starts to fear that Ian is turned off by the new body, but when Jamie “accidentally” sets up a meeting between Ian and Wanderer, they are able to reconcile, and from that moment they become partners for life.

Ian is described as tall and muscular, with black hair, dark blue eyes and pale skin. He is in his mid-twenties.
