This chapter begins a few days later. After the one Soul killed himself, Doc and Wanderer extracted both of the souls, then readied them to be shipped to another planet. While some of the humans are outside burying the dead Healer, Doc and Wanderer stay behind at their makeshift clinic, watching over the one remaining unconscious ex-host—a woman. While Doc is asleep, Wanderer attempts to find out what the human’s name is. There is no response and she begins to think that maybe one resistant hosts are able to come back—if Melanie does come back at all, that is.
Sitting beside the unresponsive body, Wanderer continues to think to herself about what will happen now. Whether or not this Healer will be able to help out the humans and whether or not it will even get to that point, as perhaps the humans will have to relocate because of Kyle. Wanderer wishes that she could stay longer to find out what will happen, to the humans and just with life in general. “I guess Summer can’t last forever,” she thinks out loud. Wanderer’s thoughts are soon interrupted as the woman’s fingers begin to move. When she wakes up, she freaks out at the sight of Wanderer. After she calms down, she relays to Doc and Wanderer that she doesn’t remember her name. Doc assures her that in time, her memories will start to come back.
Wanderer leaves the room as to not further upset “Summer” (dubbed because she reacted to hearing the word Summer, which is in fact, part of her Soul’s name: Summer Song). When she walks around the caves, she notices that many of the rooms seem to be empty. She slowly begins to panic, thinking that they all evacuated the caves in fear and left her behind. Melanie assures Wanderer that Jared, Ian, and Jamie would never do that to her. Wanderer still feels restless and decides to look in a few other rooms, all of which are as empty as previous. Wanderer’s panic increases as she thinks that maybe the Seekers are currently invading the caves. Then she begins to hear voices that resemble that of an angry mob. When she investigates the sounds, she sees that Kyle has returned with a petrified young woman who must be Jodi. Almost everyone –Sharon, Maggie, Jared, even Lacey—is yelling at Kyle, while Jeb quietly stands back and merely watches. Kyle defensively stands in front of Jodi/the Soul, blocking her from harm’s way. When Kyle sees Wanderer, he urgently calls her over to help him.
