Since Souls are peaceful, there is no real need for the police force. That means that flashing lights and sirens can only indicate the presence of one type of person: a Seeker.
Jared freezes at the sight of the the car, then apologizes to Wanderer and Melanie. He asks Wanderer if she has her cyanide pill and tells Melanie he loves her. Jared seems about ready to give up and die, but then Wanderer convinces him that maybe she can lie to the Seeker. Jared makes a split-second decision to let Wanderer try. They switch seats and wait.
The Seeker, a middle-aged man, steps out of his car and much like an actual police officer, tells Wanderer that she was driving above the speed limit. She pretends to be drowsy and uses the excuse that she was speeding because she was trying to make it to Phoenix before she fell asleep at the wheel. The Seeker asks for her name and she makes one up. They chat a little about the origin of her name and what island she lived on, then she asks if perhaps she should take a nap before driving again. The Seeker surprises Wanderer with a very loud “No!” but then he apologizes and explains that his tone is due to the fact that there was a recent disappearance. This makes Wanderer nervous, which the Seeker interprets as a fear of humans, so he allows her to continue on with her journey. He also gives her some strange inhalant to help her stay awake. Suddenly, Kyle and Ian’s car drives by. Wanderer panics again, mentally searching for her cyanide pill, but then the Seeker lets the boy’s car through, without even a second thought.
The Seeker finally leaves. Wanderer and Jared are free to continue on their journey back home. Briefly they discuss the “disappearance.” Wanderer assumed she was whom the Seeker was referring to, but Jared disagrees and thinks that it’s a much more recent case. Wanderer realizes that Jared might be referring to Doc and Jeb’s “experiments” and she begins to cry.
The mission comes to an official end as both cars make it safely back to the caves. The boys start to unload the stolen goods as Wanderer wipes away her tears so that she’ll be presentable when she sees Jamie and everyone else. Wanderer expects to be greeted cheerfully by Jamie, but to her surprise his expression is the opposite. At the sight of Wanderer, Jamie runs into her arms, sobbing, as he announces that the Seeker has killed Wes.
