We just received word from Hachette Books that Asya Muchnick, Editor of The Host, will be doing a Live BlogTalkRadio interview this Thursday (May 20) at 2:30 pm EST. You can listen to the chat as it airs here. (Don’t worry about bookmarking that if you don’t want though – we’ll remind you the day of!)

You can call in to ask a question during the show at (646) 378-0040. We’ve been invited to send in questions in advance, however, so if you’re worried about not being able to get through or will be busy at that hour, send your questions to us. We’ll collect them together and send them back to the Hachette Web Publicist to (hopefully) be answered!

We’ll also put up a transcript of the 45 minute interview on the site as soon after it airs as possible, but for now, get in your questions! Just remember, she’s not Stephenie. As the editor, we don’t know what types of questions she will be most likely to take, but she’s on the in with The Host, so anything is worth a shot. Just leave questions a response to this post.

13 new chapters have been added to the Chapter Index! You can now read the summaries for the Prologue all the way up to Chapter 44. As mentioned in a previous update, Chapters 58-Epilogue are also up for anybody who wants to refresh and/or relive the novel’s ending.

The remaining chunk of chapters (45-57) will be added to the Index throughout the week, as well as a summary for the bonus chapter.

As many of you know, the bonus chapter takes place before Chapter 58. Three new chapter summaries for the three chapters that chronologically proceed the bonus chapter have been added to the Chapter Index just in case you need to refresh your memory or if you just want to read up on the novel’s ending. :)

If you are wanting to read the summaries for Chapters 31-57, have no fear! The summaries have been written and are currently being edited. They will be up in the next few days! In addition, we are currently in the process of expanding our entire Novel section, so make sure to check back for the latest updates.

In sadder news, unfortunately the bonus chapter that Hachette had online seems to have been taken down. You can still purchase digital copies of the paperback edition, however, if you do not live in the US or are looking for a slightly cheaper option (ebook, pdf, Kindle, etc.). I will also soon be adding a summary of the bonus chapter to the site. For those who are unable to acquire the bonus chapter, let’s cross our fingers that Stephenie puts up a copy on her official website!

The Host Paperback: Annotated Playlist

The Host paperback edition comes out today with our eagerly anticipated bonus chapter! Since we’ve discussed that to the full extent pre-dating release, we thought we’d highlight one of the other extras of the paperback: the annotated playlist.

As most of us know, Stephenie Meyer has a playlist for The Host on her official website which you can stream here. In the paperback version being released today, she includes this same list of songs, but in addition explains the character from whose perspective the lyrics are meant to be read and the moment or passage that the song fits. Some songs obviously only fit a certain moment in the book, but others also correspond to themes in the story (e.g. “Futurism” by Muse and “Original of the Species” by U2).

We thought we’d highlight one of the songs from Meyer’s playlists as our “Featured Song” and add her notes from the annotated playlist: “My Body is a Cage” by The Arcade Fire.

lyric snippet:
My body is a cage that keeps me
From dancing with the one I love
But my mind holds the key
You’re standing next to me
My mind holds the key

Wanderer’s Point of View

I stared into Jared’s eyes, and the strangest thing happened. All the melting and melding I had just been through was shove aside, into the smallest part of my body, the little corner that I took up physically. The rest of me yearned toward Jared with the same desperate, half-crazed hunger I’d felt since the first time I’d seen him here. This body barely belonged to me or to Melanie – it belonged to him.

There really wasn’t room enough for the two of us in here.

There are lots of interesting additions that make this paperback version worth buying. So if you live in the United States, get out there and get your copy!

An Excerpt From The Bonus Chapter

Wall Street Journal: Stephenie Meyer’s ‘The Host’: Exclusive Mini-Excerpt from Her Novel’s New Edition

On April 13, author Stephenie Meyer will publish the paperback edition of her best-selling sci-fi book “The Host.” Meyer, the author behind the “Twilight” series of books, will include in the coming version of “The Host” a never-before seen “bonus chapter.” “The Host,” Meyer’s first novel for adults, tells the story of body-snatching aliens who invade the earth. One of these extraterrestrials, who goes by the name Wanda, develops an unusual relationship with Melanie, the woman whose body she has taken over.

Here is an exclusive mini-excerpt from the paperback:

I’m all alone.

It’s dark. I can’t remember where I am … or why I’m here. It’s wrong that I’m alone. Where is Wanda? I can’t see to look for her. I can’t remember how to call for her. It’s silent. I can’t feel her. I can’t feel our body.

Panic starts to set in as I wait for her voice. For her to say my name. To tell me where we are. To open my eyes so we can see. I need to hear her voice — my voice, in my softest tone, my gentlest inflection.

I wait, but there is nothing. Just me and the dark.

The panic gets worse as I try to remember. Did she shut me out again? That happened once, I know, but I don’t remember it. I don’t think it was like this, panicking in the dark. It was just nothing then.

And I don’t think Wanda would do that. Because we love each other. I remember we said that. Just before …something. I try to dredge up the memory.

We were saying we loved each other.… We were saying …

Good-bye.

Remember, this is written from Melanie’s point of view and occurs between chapters 58 and 59 when Wanda has just been removed from Melanie’s body.

What do you think? Like it? Dislike it? Want more?

Thanks to sunni_sideup for the heads-up!
