EXCITING NEWS. An exclusive from Variety reports that a bunch of actors will be testing for the roles of Jared and Ian in the coming days. Pretty much all of these actors aren’t of the typical “dream cast” of The Host fans, but that shouldn’t cause too much worry since the list of contenders is made up of quite a few great up and coming actors. Read the full article below!

Stephenie Meyer’s ‘Host’ zeroes in on male leads
Clutch of thesps vying for roles opposite Saoirse Ronan
By JEFF SNEIDER

With the beginning of the end in sight for “The Twilight Saga,” author Stephenie Meyer is turning her attention to the casting search for “The Host,” Andrew Niccol’s feature adaptation of her sci-fi novel.
Saoirse Ronan (“Hanna”) is attached to star as protag Melanie Stryder, whose body is invaded by an alien named Wanderer, who will also be played by Ronan. In the coming days, producers will begin testing actors for the pic’s two male leads.

Liam Hemsworth (“The Hunger Games”), Kit Harington (“Game of Thrones”), Jai Courtney (“One Shot”) and Max Irons (“Red Riding Hood”) will test for the role of Jared, Melanie’s boyfriend. Dane DeHaan (“In Treatment”), Thomas McDonnell (“Prom”), Augustus Prew (“The Borgias”) and Ronan’s “Lovely Bones” co-star Jake Abel will test for the role of Ian, a menacing young man who brutalizes Wanderer before falling in love with her.

Chockstone Pictures principals Steve Schwartz and Paula Mae Schwartz are producing with Nick Wechsler and Meyer. Inferno’s Marc Butan, Jim Seibel and Bill Johnson will exec produce, while Roger Schwartz will co-produce. “The Host” is being financed by the producers and Inferno, which is handling sales.

Of the lists above, who would you like to see in the roles of Jared and Ian? Do you think these actors have what it takes to play our favourite male leads?

Andrew Niccol, director of The Host, is interview about his new movie In Time, but around 1:15 he starts talking about The Host!  He mentions how it’s his first screen adaptation and that condensing the 600 page book into one movie was like a “workout.”  He says we should be expecting casting news soon (but drops no hints).  He does say, however, that Saoirse Ronan is going to be “fantastic.”

Deadline has published the official press release from The Host movie distributor, Open Road Films. This is the first official statement from any of the companies involved in making the movie that states that Saoirse Ronan has been cast as Melanie Stryder, so it appears her casting has been officially confirmed. The release also says that The Host movie is going to be release March 29, 2013. Finally, a definite date! Also, “principal photography is scheduled to being in February 2012 in Louisiana and New Mexico” so fans in Louisiana and New Mexico, get your cameras ready!

Here’s the full release:

Los Angeles, CA, June 27, 2011 – Open Road Films has acquired U.S. distribution rights to “The Host,” the big screen adaptation of Twilight series author Stephenie Meyer’s best-selling novel. As previously announced, “The Host” will be directed by Andrew Niccol (“Gattaca”), who also wrote the screenplay, and will star Saoirse Ronan (“Hanna,” “The Lovely Bones,” “Atonement”). Open Road Films has set a March 29, 2013 release date (Easter weekend) for “The Host.”

“The Host” producers are Nick Wechsler, Chockstone Pictures’ Paula Mae Schwartz and Steve Schwartz, and Stephenie Meyer. Marc Butan, Jim Siebel, and Bill Johnson of Inferno Entertainment, which is handling international sales, are executive producers. Claudia Bluemhuber of Silver Reel, which is providing mezzanine financing, is also an executive producer. Roger Schwartz and Lizzy Bradford are co-producers.

Principal photography is scheduled to being in February 2012 in Louisiana and New Mexico, in anticipation of the wide release on March 29, 2013.

“The Host” is a riveting story about the survival of love and the human spirit in a time of war. Our world has been invaded by an unseen enemy. Humans become hosts for these invaders, their minds taken over while their bodies remain intact. Most of humanity has succumbed.

When Melanie, one of the few remaining “wild” humans, is captured, she is certain it is her end. Wanderer, the invading “soul” who has been given Melanie’s body, was warned about the challenges of living inside a human: the overwhelming emotions, the glut of senses, the too-vivid memories. But there was one difficulty Wanderer didn’t expect: the former tenant of her body refusing to relinquish possession of her mind.

When outside forces make Wanderer and Melanie unwilling allies, they set off on a dangerous and uncertain search for the man they both love.

The Host, published in 2008, was Stephenie Meyer’s highly anticipated follow-up to the wildly popular and acclaimed Twilight series. The book was #1 on The New York Times Bestseller List for 26 weeks. The “Twilight” film franchise, based on Stephenie Meyer’s beloved and best-selling novels, has grossed over $1.4 billion in worldwide box office ticket sales to date.

Regarding Open Road Films, Stephenie Meyer’s stated, “I’m thrilled to be adding another fantastic partner to an already amazing group. Everyone involved has so much passion for the project. It really is a dream team.”

“We are privileged to partner with Stephenie Meyer and the rest of the filmmaking team for the release of ‘The Host,” added Tom Ortenberg, CEO of Open Road Films. “Nick Wechsler is a terrific producer and a long time friend and we are honored to be working with Nick and Stephenie – and the wonderful minds of Steve and Paula Mae Schwartz – to bring this epic story of hope to the big screen.”

Producers Nick Wechsler, Steve Schwartz and Paula Mae Schwartz commented, “We are excited about the passion that Tom Ortenberg and Open Road Films has shown for ‘The Host,’ and we think this is a great opportunity to be partnered with AMC and Regal at the beginning of their new joint venture.”

The deal was negotiated on behalf of Open Road Films by Ortenberg, General Counsel and Executive Vice President of Operations and Business Affairs, Elliott Kleinberg, and Senior Vice President of Acquistions Ben Cotner. Rena Ronson of UTA’s Independent Film Group and David Fox of Myman Greenspan Fineman Fox Light LLP, along with Philip Strina of Inferno, negotiated on behalf of the filmmakers.

The Host Movie Finds a US Distributor

According to Deadline, Open Road Films is acquiring domestic distribution rights to The Host.” You may not have heard of Open Road, because it was only recently formed and is described as an “upstart distribution company formed by theater chains AMC and Regal.” Open Road apparently beat out at least 3 other distributors for the seven-figure minimum guarantee The Host deal which includes a “healthy” publicity and advertising commitment from the company. (This assures the producer that the distributor will give the picture a meaningful theatrical release.)

When it was announced that Open Road Films was being formed, it was reported that it would be “a distribution company focused on festival and international films that are polished enough for wide distribution. According to reports, distribution options will go beyond AMC and Regal venues.” [source] At least this doesn’t mean The Host fans will have to be scouring for their local AMC or Regal theaters, but this seems a bit different from what The Host movie promises to be. However, the “company will not get involved with developing or producing movies, though it may guarantee distribution early in the process if a project has a high-level director or actor attached to it.” [source] This may mean that the Deadline comment that Saoirse Ronan is set to play heroine Melanie Stryder,” is close to becoming official.

Open Road Films currently distributes DVD, Blu-ray, and other digital platforms through Universal Studios Home Entertainment which is also the American home distributor of Summit Entertainment, distributor of the Twilight films. (Coincidence? Probably yes, but worth noting.)

This interview is from a few days ago (May 12th) and therefore doesn’t have any new information for us regarding the movie. However, Saoirse did give a bit of insight into her feelings about the project (the brief Host section starts around 3:26):

SS: There’s been news in the paper today about you being in The Host movie, [based on] Stephenie Meyer’s novel. Is that true?

Saoirse: Um, it’s not false.

SS: It’s not confirmed?

Saoirse: It’s not confirmed, and nothing’s actually been finalized, so we’re talking about it to the people who are involved. It’s different from Twilight as well which is good, you know, it’s a different type of story. So yes, hopefully it will work out.

Bravo for Saoirse’s understanding that though Twilight fans and Host fans do overlap, they aren’t necessarily one in the same. Also, don’t you just love her Irish brogue?

Saoirse says ‘Host’ role “still to be locked down”

In an interview today with Scottish news site NEWS.scotsman.com, Saoirse Ronan was still non-committal about her potential role in The Host:

Ronan is as excitable as any teen, chatting about her dog Sassy, a concert she’s going to, and waves her new nail-polish at me, which is a vivid green. But she’s aware of her clout too; earlier that day it was reported that she’s to star in a movie called The Host, based on a novel by Twilight author Stephenie Meyer. “Oh, that’s not right,” corrects Ronan in a matter-of-fact manner. “That deal’s still to be locked down.”

With the Cannes Film Festival happening as we speak (where The Host will purportedly be promoted), we should be getting some actual news any time now. We’ll keep you posted. Hang in there, Host fans!

Saoirse Ronan talks with BBC Newsbeat about ‘The Host’

While promoting her new movie Hanna in a recent interview with BBC Newsbeat, Saoirse was asked about her involvement in The Host, and again didn’t give any definitive answers about it. However, she did express her desire to work on it, and acknowledged how excited the fandom is about the potential casting:

As for what’s next, Ronan says things are very much “just floating around in the air” although she is in talks to star in The Host, an upcoming film adaptation of the novel by Stephanie Meyer (who wrote the Twilight series).

She said: “It would be great if it worked out. People seem to be quite excited about it.”

So in short, nothing new. Nothing is set in stone, but if an actress as talented as Saoirse wants in, it shouldn’t be too hard to get her officially on board. With the Cannes Film Festival around the corner (in which Deadline reported that The Host will be promoted to potential buyers) things are sure to firm up soon.

We’ve updated the Movie section of our site and now have a Cast page that features Saoirse’s biography. As we get more cast members officially on board, we will update it accordingly. Head over and check it out!

Saoirse Ronan has announced to the Belfast Telegraph, in an article published this Thursday, that she will not be taking a part in ‘The Hobbit’ movie adaptation:

Saoirse Ronan has revealed she will not be playing woodland elf Itaril in ‘The Hobbit.’

The Hanna star had been in talks to star in ‘The Lord Of The Rings’ prequel, directed by Peter Jackson, who she worked with on ‘The Lovely Bones,’ but has now signed up to star in ‘The Host.’

Saoirse revealed: “It’s probably not going to work out with ‘The Hobbit’ unfortunately.

“Because I would have been working for about a year on it and there were other projects that I was very interested in, but Pete and [his producer wife] Fran have been very good about it and very understanding.

Looks like ‘The Hobbit’ has lost out, but to our benefit!

Note: There is interview from IndieLondon circulating around The Host fansites. In this interview Saoirse Ronan said regarding her casting in ‘The Host’ that, “Nothing is actually for definite yet.” This interview does not have a date on it, however, and may be been done before Ronan’s casting became official. Also, it is important to note that Deadline, who announced the casting, is a very reliable source. Therefore, the information from from IndieLondon should be viewed with skepticism.

It is important to remember that nothing is set in stone until we get an official casting announcement from Chockstone Pictures or Ronan’s representation.

Clevver TV talks Saorise Ronan’s Casting in ‘The Host’ movie

They say that casting for ‘The Host’ movie is in “full force.” They also opine, “Twi-hards are likely looking forward to another movie from Stephenie and hearing that it’s going to star an actress with the performance level of Saoirse is very, very good news.”

Not much new in this video, but they don’t seem to acknowledge that The Host has a separate fan base. I’m not so happy with the Twi-hard label; anyone have any ideas for a name for fans of The Host before we get labeled by the entertainment media?

While promoting her new movie Hanna in a twitter chat today with Glamour UK, Saoirse received a Host related question from TwilightMoms. The Tweet speaks for itself:

the tweet

So, while “I’d love to be involved. Let’s hope” is not a rock-solid confirmation that she will be playing the part, it also doesn’t mean that the news of her casting is rumor. Actors generally wait for the ink to dry on the contracts before saying anything publicly about parts. At the end of her chat, she also confirmed her Twitter ID @saoirse_ronan. You can find the entire twitter chat log here. Exciting!
