Stephenie Meyer’s ‘The Host’ scoop: Max Irons will play Jared — EXCLUSIVE
The fifth and final Twilight film may be scheduled to release next November, but Stephenie Meyer ain’t done with you yet. Her best-selling 2008 science-fiction novel The Host — her only non-Twilight work to date — is in the process of being turned into a film, so expect to hear plenty of news about it between now and its March 29, 2013 release date. In fact, here’s some right now: The important role of Jared Howe will be played by 26-year-old actor Max Irons, EW has learned.
Irons, son of Oscar-winning and golden-throated actor Jeremy Irons, was last seen in this year’s Red Riding Hood. For this project, he joins director Andrew Niccol (In Time, Gattaca) and the long-attached Saoirse Ronan, who will play Melanie Stryder, a young woman who shares her body with an alien force known as Wanderer. Since no Meyer novel is complete without some complicated relationship geometry, Jake Abel has been cast in the role of Ian, a man who falls in love with Wanderer despite the fact that she is in the body of Melanie who is in love with Jared. Fans of the book, may I suggest you start preparing your visual aids and PowerPoint explanations now.
The film will begin shooting in February in Louisiana and then New Mexico and will mark one of the first productions for Open Road Films, a young distribution company backed by AMC and Regal theater chains.
It’s mind boggling that we now have our trio! What does everyone think about Max as Jared?

I like the boys. I always pictured older looking people, eventhough I know they are young. I think they look good together. I can’t wait to see what they all look like once they’re done up for the movie.
Does anyone have insight about Irons’ acting ability? I heard he pouted a lot in Red Riding.
I’m not familiar with him, so… I don’t really have anything to say. Other than (however foolish and petty it may be) my heart died a little to know Jensen really never will be Jared.
BUT OH MY GOD I’m really excited that The Host is really, truly moving forward now!
I’m glad they’re going for a younger cast. After all, if there are sequels, they won’t look as out of place as Robert Pattinson. (He still doesn’t, and never will look 17 to me.)
I never even truly imagined Jensen would ever take that role. So I’m pretty happy – nay, OVERJOYED with the cast. Especially Jake Abel!
None of them look like I’ve pictured them. But I think they are a good trio
he’s a lot older than his love interest Saoirse as Melanie, who’s only 17 compared to max who’s 27.
but well, i’m positive that he won’t screw up in this movie. he proved it already in Red Riding Hood. The “The Host Movie” will be in a full swing and roaring in theaters.
it all boils down to my excitement for this movie and Max’s big acting role!
@wonderiris when Jared and Melanie first meet eachother they are 27 and 17 respectively, so the age differences between Saoirse and Max shouldn’t be a problem, in fact, it might even work in the movie’s favour!
I’ve been absolutely sure i’d hate the cast, but to be honest.. i’m really happy and satisfied! They all look really good and they actually look really similar to how I pictures them! This makes me sooo stoked!
I can’t say I liked Max in “Red Riding Hood” because I didn’t even liked that movie, but I hope so much that he will make a nice Jared. The age difference is OK for me, judging by the character’s age.
I don’t want to be against this cast, I really don’t, because I have no idea if they are good actors or not, so I’ll just hope for the best… maybe they will be great, maybe.. just maybe..
I actually did like Red Riding Hood, but I wouldn’t have liked it nearly as much without Max. There was ample pouting in the movie, but not too much from him, I don’t think. His acting was actually quite subtle. I kept thinking that I hoped he would do other projects I’m interested in–which is now happening!
